Pirates reliever Blake Cederlind to visit doctor who operated on right elbow

Blake Cederlind needs to see the doctor who operated on Tommy John on the Pittsburgh Pirates’ right-handed reliever to check for recurring pain in his right elbow.

When asked if Cederlind’s visit with Dr. Neal ElAttrache – who operated on retired Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s right elbow in 2020 – is a sign that a second Tommy John operation will be needed , Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomcyzk was candid.

“Not at this stage,” Tomczyk said.

Two other Pirates right-handed relievers, Chase De Jong and Nick Mears, are making progress in their recovery.

De Jong is “recovering well” from tendonitis in his left knee, Tomczyk said, will hold a live batting practice in the coming days and is expected to spend the minimum time on the 15-day injured list. De Jong is eligible to return on Monday.

Mears, who had surgery on his right elbow, pitched a scoreless inning at Low-A Bradenton on Tuesday and had his rehab assignment moved to Triple-A Indianapolis. Tomcyzk said Mears’ discharges “went as planned” and his “tissue response was normal.”

Outfielder Jake Marisnick (sprained right big toe) will remain in a walking boot for another week.

Two players injured at the end of the season are starting to progress. Receiver Roberto Perez, who had surgery on his left hamstring, started doing “ground conditioning.” Outfielder Canaan Smith-Njigba, who has an undisplaced fracture to his right wrist, is showing signs of healing but has yet to grab a stick.

In the minors, 2020 first-round pick Nick Gonzales is recovering from plantar fasciitis in Pirate City and is making “very good progress” and is expected to participate in game activities in the next seven to 10 days, said said Tomczyk.

Doube-A receiver Henry Davis, the No. 1 overall pick in 2021 with an undisplaced ulnar styloid fracture in his left wrist, is still recovering but “a little slower than Nick,” Tomczyk said.

Low-A right-hander Brennan Malone, who was traded from Arizona to Starling Marte, continues to have “recurrent shoulder pain,” Tomczyk said. Malone visited team doctors in Pittsburgh but returned to Florida while the Pirates put in place a recovery plan.

Indianapolis infielder Ji-hwan Bae was added to the minor league 7-day injured list on Thursday with a strained left oblique.
